Case Study: Aluminium Welding with MIG (GMAW)

  1 more

Recently a walk-in customer found us through a Google search while looking for an aluminium welding power source. As usual, we suggested using an AC/DC TIG welding machine, which is commonly recommended for aluminium welding.

However, the customer insisted on welding aluminium using the MIG (GMAW) process. After further discussion regarding the welding method, requirements, and expected results, the customer decided to proceed with purchasing a MIG welding machine from us.

Our team then set up the machine at the customer’s site, including the necessary parts and appropriate working parameters to ensure proper operation.

Findings from the Case Study

  1. Modification of equipment is required
Torch, wire feeder system, shielding gas and gas regulator configuration must be suitable for aluminium welding.

  2. Proper parameter setup is critical
Correct adjustment of amperage, voltage and wire feeding speed is important to achieve proper material melting and successful joint formation when welding aluminium.

This case demonstrates that although AC/DC TIG welding is commonly recommended, aluminium welding can also be successfully performed using MIG (GMAW) when the correct equipment setup and parameters are applied.
